About Lone Dingo

Lone Dingo was born from a passion for central Australia and the unique outdoor opportunities the central ranges and desert presented. Back in 2001 when the business was established the now well known Larapinta Trail was incomplete, mountain biking was in its infancy and you could count the number of rock climbers in town on one hand. Nowadays there is tight knit and enthusiastic outdoor community in the centre and thousands of visitors come each year to trek and ride in the centre. Climbing is still a frontier pursuit – just how the local climbing community likes it, and outdoor enthusiasts being outdoor enthusiasts some more obscure activities such as white water kayaking on flooding inland rivers that rarely flow are now undertaken.

The establishment of a modern, specialized outdoor store back in 2001 has been vindicated.

Lone Dingo has moved, grown and evolved over the years and today it occupies an expansive shop right in the middle of Alice Springs in Todd Mall and can rightfully claim to be the best specialist outdoor store in the Northern Territory.

Lone Dingo is committed to dealing with only quality outdoor and travel equipment and clothing from brands that have earned their reputation in the field, at prices that are competitive in the wider market place. Despite industry trends, we remain an independent business, so we are not forced to carry the brands the chain headquarters have negotiated a deal with. We handpick the brands from around the world that are best in their field, iconic brands like: Patagonia, Scarpa, Mont, The North Face, Black Diamond, Thermarest, Camelbak, Teva, and the list goes on.

We stock gear that works for our region & similar regions around the world that have stinking hot summers & chilly winters.

We have also worked hard to put together all the right gear for the popular local trek, the Larapinta Trail. The Larapinta Trail presents unique challenges to standard bush walking gear and we’ve learnt from experience what works and what doesn’t.

When you Visit Lone Dingo you will talk to people that have spent many hours using our gear in real world conditions. They will assist you in making your selection, but there will be no hard sell, no selling up, no hounding customers for a sale; it’s our mission to have customers select the right gear for the job & enjoy doing it. We treat customers as we would like to be treated ourselves.

Basically we want you to enjoy the outdoors and travel as much as we do.

Where does the name Lone Dingo come from?

Anyone who has caught sight of a lone dingo moving stealthily in the outback, free of pack affiliations, comfortable in his surroundings, or heard his mournful howl at night cannot help but be inspired by this desert survivor.

The lone dingo symbolises what so many of us are seeking when we head outdoors. Isolation, intamacy with the environment, a simple existence, a better understanding of ourselves; the motivation behind so many of lifes journeys. The motivation behind Lone Dingo.
