Simpsons Gap Bike Path

The Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path is a favourite among the local cycling community for road, mountain bike and casual cyclists alike.  The regular but short inclines, declines and sweeping bends make for a pleasurable riding experience.

It is a sealed bitumen path that meanders for 17 km through attractive bushland between Flynns Grave and Simpsons Gap.  It starts just opposite Flynns Grave about 5km to the west of the Alice Springs CBD.  Return is via the same path or a slighter longer route on the road via Larapinta Drive.

Vantage points provide panoramic views of the hills and ranges encircling Alice Springs. You see part of this ancient landscape as the path winds from creekside woodlands of River Red Gums, through Mulga and Witchetty Bush groves, to exposed rocky hills.

Cycling slowly and quietly enables close encounters with wildlife, particularly lizards and birds, usually seen in the early morning or late afternoon.  The low light also makes this the best time to appreciate and photograph  the changing contours and colours of the expansive MacDonnell Ranges landscape.

Eighteen information signs along the path explain aspects of the area’s fascinating natural and scenic features. They are a great place to rest your legs and discover more about the path’s surroundings.

Cycling Club

There is a lot of cross pollination between the Alice Springs Cycling Club and the local mountain bike club; Rough Riders.  What better way to get fit for cross country riding than getting a few k’s under the belt on the road.

The Alice Springs Cycling Club has been operating since 1966. The club promotse all cycling in Central Australia where we have a world class outside velodrome, easy access to endless mountain trails and the Simpson Gap bike path.  The Club provides a broad variety of cycling activities including road and mountain bike social rides and road, track and mountain bike.

There is a smorgasbord of social rides pretty much every day of the week to cater from casual to more serious riders as well as a comprehensive competition calender.  Check out their website for times and details.
