Alice Springs Walking And Running Club

The club promotes and encourages running and walking as a competitive sport as well as recreational jogging and walking for the improvement of general fitness for individuals of all ages and abilities. Training programs of varying levels, for runners and walkers is offered by an approved club coach on almost every day.

The event calendar caters for varied levels of fitness and ability, from the short distance fun runs and walks, to the classic race events such as the 10 km Series, the Half Marathon, the Marathon, and for the first time ever in the Northern Territory – The Alice Springs Ultra. The Alice Springs Marathon has been held every year since the Club’s inception. The Marathon is recognised nationally and internationally as an extremely friendly and well organised event, attracting both interstate and international competitors in addition to local entrants. A major contributor to the success of our club is our coordination of the Road & Cross Country events for the Alice Springs Masters Games.


A long distance running event on the Larapinta Trail? Plenty of people have seen the opportunity for such an event and it was only a matter of time before an entrepreneurial person or organisation took on the challenge, and now there is two!
Organised by Rapid ascent…. “As good as the trail is for multi-day hiking, it is even better for trail running with endless kilometres of single track stretching through an incredible landscape. The trail infrastructure allows for great running with a well-trodden route through the magnificent MacDonnell Ranges that is not too technical underfoot, includes ample trail signage, water tanks, emergency access points and endless views from start to finish.As with any long journey, there are good sections and there are terrific sections and we have combined the best of the best to create the courses for the event… we’ve taken you straight to the heart of the trails – the most scenic, the most diverse, the most eternal.
Brought to you by Alice Springs Running and Walking Club… “ the West Macs Monster (WMM) is the iconic and formidable end to end Larapinta Trail race you’ve been waiting for! 231kms of spectacular and rugged single track affectionately named the ‘Sonder Monster’ that winds itself through the ancient West MacDonnell (Tjoritja) Ranges landscape in Central Australia. The course provides an intimidating, yet alluring test of physical and mental endurance in a non-stop, end to end race format with a 60 hour cut-off.
Only a handful of individuals have ever attempted and succeeded at completing the full trail distance in under 60 hours with the current fastest known time of 40 hours 55 minutes 18 seconds set at the West Macs Monster in May 2019 by Shane Johnstone from Western Australia.
