Alice Springs Walking And Running Club

The club promotes and encourages running and walking as a competitive sport as well as recreational jogging and walking for the improvement of general fitness for individuals of all ages and abilities. Training programs of varying levels, for runners and walkers is offered by an approved club coach on almost every day.

The event calendar caters for varied levels of fitness and ability, from the short distance fun runs and walks, to the classic race events such as the 10 km Series, the Half Marathon, the Marathon, and for the first time ever in the Northern Territory – The Alice Springs Ultra. The Alice Springs Marathon has been held every year since the Club’s inception. The Marathon is recognised nationally and internationally as an extremely friendly and well organised event, attracting both interstate and international competitors in addition to local entrants. A major contributor to the success of our club is our coordination of the Road & Cross Country events for the Alice Springs Masters Games.


A long distance running event on the Larapinta Trail? Plenty of people have seen the opportunity for such an event and it was only a matter of time before an entrepreneurial person or organisation took on the challenge. Rapid Ascent has come to the party and are holding their inaugural ‘Run Larapinta’ Stage Race in August 2016. That’s right on the back of their ever popular MTB stage race which was formally known as the Ingerreke MTB Enduro, but is now called simply ‘The Redback’; it will be held in August also. There’s already talk of competitors signing up for both events!
Rapid Ascent do a fantastic job of organising these events and show casing central Australia to an enthusiastic interstate audience. West Macs Monster is the most exciting event on the Larapinta Trail in Central Australia.

The iconic Larapinta Trail, in the West McDonnell Ranges in Australia’s Red Centre is definitely a bucket list hiking destination for thousands of people around the world each year. Now ultra runners will have the opportunity to test themselves on 231km of spectacular single track in a full length end to end, supported, non-stop ultra race event being organised by the Alice Springs Running and Walking Club (ASRWC).

A new end to end record was set at the 2019 event by Perth runner Shane Johnstone. An amazing time of 40 hours 55 minutes and 18 seconds blitzed the previous record by nearly 18 hours.

The event is on May 22nd, 23rd & 24th May, 2020.

As well as the full length 231km ultra (6 ITRA Points), there will be ultra options of 128km (5 ITRA Points) from Ellery Creek or a 65km (3 ITRA Points) from Standley Chasm.

The most popular and fun event is the fantastic Section 1 of the trail, running a 25km distance from Simpsons Gap and finally a family orientated fun run of around 5km at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. All events finish on the Sunday at the Historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station in a massive festival environment with food, music and entertainment.
